Texts From Jane Eyre:  And Other Conversations with Your Favorite Literary Characters  by Mallory Ortberg In Texts From Jane Eyre, Mallory Ortberg attempts to answer the age-old philosophical question: if famous literary characters could send text messages, what would they say? What began as a feature on The Toast (RIP) spawned into a delightful collection featuring SMS missives from Scarlett O’Hara, Daisy Buchanan, and a few members of the Baby-Sitters Club (YES, I SAID FAMOUS LITERARY CHARACTERS AND I MEANT IT). Each interaction is only a few pages long but 100% smart, fun, and mildly addicting. If your party guest disappears into the bathroom for a long period of time and you hear squeals of laughter from behind the locked door, don’t jump to illicit conclusions. It may simply be that your pal has lost track of time thanks to Ortberg’s imagination. Whats Your Poo Telling You  by Josh Richman and  Anish Sheth I know, it’s not for everyone. Milton Obote

Apollo Milton Obote (some say Milton Apollo Obote) was the 2nd and 4th President of Uganda. He first came to power in 1962 but was ousted by Idi Amin in 1971. Who was he, how was he able to come back into power, and why is he forgotten in favor of Amin? Rise to Power Who he was and how he came to power twice are the easier questions to answer. Obote was the son of a minor tribal chief and received some university education at the prestigious Makerere University in Kampala. He then moved to Kenya where he joined the independence movement in the late 1950s. He returned to Uganda and entered the political fray and by 1959 was the leader of a new political party, the Uganda People’s Congress. After independence, Obote aligned with the royalist Bugandan party. (Buganda had been a large kingdom in pre-colonial Uganda that remained in existence under Britain’s policy of indirect rule.)   As a coalition, Obote’s UPC and the royalist Bugandans held a majority of seats in the new parliament, and Obote became the first elected Prime Minister of Uganda after independence. Prime Minister, President When Obote was elected Prime Minister, Uganda was a federalized state. There was also a President of Uganda, but that was a largely ceremonial position, and from 1963 to 1966, it was the Kabaka (or king) of Baganda that held it. In 1966, however, Obote began purging his government and orchestrated a new constitution, passed by the parliament, that did away with both the federalization of Uganda and the Kabaka. Backed by the army, Obote became President and gave himself wide-sweeping powers. When the Kabaka objected, he was forced into exile. The Cold War and the Arab-Israeli War Obote’s Achilles heel was his reliance on the military and his self-proclaimed socialism. Soon after he became President, the West looked askance at Obote who, in the politics of  Cold War  Africa, was seen as a potential ally of the USSR. Meanwhile, many in the West thought that Obote’s military commander, Idi Amin, would be a wonderful ally (or pawn) in Africa. There was also a further complication in the form of Israel, who feared that Obote would upset their support of Sudanese rebels; they too thought Amin would be more amenable to their plans. Obote’s strong-arm tactics within Uganda had also lost him support within the country, and when Amin, aided by foreign backers, launched a coup in January 1971, the West, Israel, and Uganda rejoiced. Tanzanian Exile and Return The rejoicing was short-lived. Within a few years, Idi Amin had become notorious for his human rights abuses and repression. Obote, who was living in exile in Tanzania where he had been welcomed by fellow socialist Julius Nyerere, was a frequent critic of Amin’s regime. In 1979, when Amin invaded the Kagera strip in Tanzania, Nyerere said enough was enough and launched the Kagera War, during which Tanzanian troops pushed Uganda troops out of Kagera, then followed them into Uganda and helped force the overthrow of Amin. Many believed that the subsequent presidential elections were rigged, and as soon as Obote was inaugurated President of Uganda again, he was facing resistance. The most serious resistance came from National Resistance Army led by Yoweri Museveni. The army responded by brutally suppressed the civilian population in the NLA’s stronghold. Human rights groups put the count at between 100,000 and 500,000. In 1986, Museveni seized power, and Obote fled into exile again. He died in Zambia in 2005. Sources: Dowden, Richard. As the owners could no longer squeeze the market for the most profit, they began to outsource these factory jobs to other countries, dodging the regulations in the US, while they take advantage of poorer countries who do not have these regulations. SITS personality types are considered quiet reserved people who are loyal, faithful, and dependable (â€Å"Psychological Type†, 2014). They tend to express a strong sense of duty and commitment and are recently very serious individuals (â€Å"Jung Typology Test†, 2014). In the following paragraphs will discuss the validity of the different letters of my personality type and how they specifically relate to me. Introvert Preference On the Jung Typology Test, I scored a distinct preference of 67% introversion over extroversion. As an introvert, I tend to focus within myself for satisfaction. Frequently I have to force myself to interact with people in a social setting. I rarely enjoy hanging out in large groups of people. I prefer to spend time alone and would consider myself a â€Å"home body’. When I do go out, it is usually to a place where I don’t have to interact with people on a personal level. Sitting in a dark movie theatre with my family or eating dinner at a restaurant are perfect examples of a low threat social setting. Throughout my life I have always had 1 or 2 deep friendships as opposed to a large group of friends. Sensing Preference With a sensing presence of 62%, according to the Jung Typology Test, I seem to conform to approximately 70% of the U. S. Population regarding this preference (Kroger, Teethes, Rutledge, 2002). Sensors are defined as individuals that prefer to get their information in a literal way from their 5 senses as opposed to getting information in a figurative way like an intuitive arson would (â€Å"Psychological Type†, 2014). In both my personal and professional life prefer to deal in facts and live by a set of rules. As a 25 year military veteran, have been conditioned to respond and react exactly this way. I tend to rely on my experiences to help me analyze the specifics as they are presented to me. A major weakness with my preference for sensing is that sometimes refuse to look at things from another perspective. Thinking In this measured area of the Jung Typology Test, I demonstrated a clear propensity for the thinking preference with a rating of 88%. As a manager in he military profession, pride myself on my ability to be objective, fair and firm. As a supervisor I frequently make difficult decisions and firmly believe that it is more important to be respected than liked. Always try to look at things from a logical perspective and try not to let my personal feelings get in the way of my decisions. One down side with the thinking preference is that it is possible to forget about the people perspective when you are making decisions (â€Å"Psychological Type†, 2014). Judging Preference The judging preference was my most definitive personality preference with rating of 100% on th e Jung Typology Test. In my military profession I live by a schedule, make decisive judgments, and always try to follow the established rules and regulations. Onto like to wait until the last minute to do things. I am also very conservative and regulated in my approach to my personal and professional life. One weakness of my overwhelmingly strong judging preference is that frequently have little patience with people that are procrastinators, poor planners, or unable to make decisions. SITS Personality with a SO Temperament People with SITS personalities are considered internally focused individuals ho exhibit; strong senses of duty, good organizational skills, are driven to succeed, are honest, and value their integrity (â€Å"Psychological Type†, 2014). My temperament is a Sensing Judging (SO). SO temperaments desire to be associated with significant institutions or organizations (Kroger, Teethes, Rutledge, 2002). As a Non-commissioned Officer in the united States Air Force this makes perfect sense. I enjoy the daily challenges associated with being an administrator and manager. I have a deep respect for the chain of command within my organization, and pride myself on being reliable. A active byproduct is that in my personal life my SO temperament can sometimes be overwhelming for my children because I tend to be a task master. Relating Personality Types to Organizations After reading Type Talk at Work, I have a greater knowledge of the 16 different personality types and how they relate to organizational behavior. As a manager in an organization, it is essential that I am able to calculate the internal strengths and weaknesses of my employees (Fisher, 2012). Understanding how to analyze an individual based on their personality type can be of enormous benefit to me as a supervisor. Throughout my years as an enlisted manager in the IIS Air Force, I have learned that each individual is different and you have to manage them accordingly. For example; if I have to assign someone as training instructor, probably would look for an extrovert over an introvert. Since having someone who is comfortable speaking in front of people would be vital for this position, an extrovert personality would be a better choice. Motivation is also different based on personality. Extroverts enjoy being rewarded in public, while introverts might prefer a more low key setting. As a manager it is also important for me to understand how my own personality type effects my management style. As a SITS personality type, occasionally have a tendency to dismiss the perspectives of others. I also am a very â€Å"by the book† manager. In most societies, women are seen as homemakers and this has denied women opportunities to join the public domain (Madsen, 2000). On the other hand, men are the ones occupying this positions making them to be a step ahead. Gilman in her feminism theory argued that household responsibilities needed to be professionalized to give women enough time to participate in economic and leadership activities (Kenneth, 2010). Despite of many attempts and endless struggle by women, it has been a challenging journey to get to this level. This is because it is very expensive to get a qualified housekeeper. Women are also forced to make a decision of letting someone else look after their children or concentrate with work and live with the guilt of not taking care of their children. The level of flexibility in domestic roles has not yet been achieved hindering women from creating a balance between their work and household duties (Madsen, 2000). According to Gilman’s theory, the society has looked at women as sex objects to be us ed by men (Allen, 2009). As such, women have been subjected to harassment and gender based violence. At times, women experience such cases of harassment but they do not report these cases. This is because when such cases happen, the blame is directed towards women especially regarding issues of dressing. The society does not treat them as victims. Although, the society has made tremendous improvements in reducing sexual harassment by giving women platforms to speak out and defend themselves, many changes are required in prevention of gender violence and sexual harassment (Allen, 2009). Because of gender mainstreaming in the education sector, women now have access to education compared to past years when women were denied this fundamental right. Gilman in her feminism theory argues that, women have the right to education and involvement in productive labor outside the house/home (Kenneth, 2010). To demonstrate emerging changes, the number of women going to school and graduating as pr ofessionals has been rising gradually over the years. Indeed, feminism movements have accomplished so much in liberating women from oppression. Charlotte Gilman is a feminist who dedicated her work in advocating for women by encouraging and promoting equality she has contributed a lot towards acquiring social change (Puente, 2006). Through her theory, she was able to start the process of social engineering, which has changed the social relations between men and women. The society has learned to appreciate women for who they are. This is a major improvement in the social structure, which benefits both men and women. Recommendation and conclusion It is no doubt that Charlotte Gilman has done a wonderful job through her feminism theory (Allen, 2009). Indeed, she has represented the views of the women by highlighting their plights in the society. Through her views and opinions, the society has been transformed. Today, social restructuring is already taking place and women are slowly by slowly having similar opportunities just like men (Puente, 2006). Today, we have women who are presidents, CEOs, managers, Doctors and so on. To create equilibrium in the society, the opinion is that, women should be at liberty to do what they want with their bodies and lives. They should be able to enjoy what they like doing especially practicing housekeeping and child rearing. There is need to integrate women in the society to enable them have adequate chances to participate in the public sphere. Since women are not less beings, they should be offered equal opportunities just like men to work, take leadership roles, and interact with the outside world (Puente, 2006). Roles of women at home should not be used to discriminate them. Alternatively, there is need to professionalize those roles that are considered for women such as housekeeping and child caring. What Ails Indian Sports?

One of the greatest† degradations that has occurred in our country during the second half of the twentieth century, has been in the field of sports and games. The† only major performance of note has been the gold medal in hockey won at the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and the triumph at the 1983 & 2011 world cup in cricket,plus a few individual medals in Olympics and few success in Tennis. But these occasional triumphs do not augur well for the future of Indian sports. A nation of 1. 2 billion has not been able to produce a sportsperson or athlete of international standards even after 6 decades of independence. In today’s new climate of peace, a nation’s achievements in sports are valued far above its arsenal or military might. We have, however, lagged behind in every field in spite of a large potential manpower. What does really ail Indian sports? With a few honourable exceptions like cricket, chess and tennis (where, even at the best of times, our performance has been erratic to say the least), our sportspersons and athletes like the ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh and the ‘Sprint Queen’ P. T. Usha have failed to find a mention in the international medal tally, in spite of their best efforts and glowing eulogies at home. The chances of our doing well or making a mark in the international arena remain grim till date. At home also, the standard in regional, state-level and national-level games is fast deteriorating. The malady, indeed, is deep rooted. The first and the foremost cause is the poor state of our economy. We cannot spot, nourish and nurture talent even in the initial stages. Whoever hits the spotlight is, by and large, a fluke. He or she has done it on one’s own merit. For instance, our cricket hero Kapil Dev has come up’ against all odds to make a mark in international cricket. Privatisation or sponsorship of the various games and sports is the only answer especially when we cannot spare enough funds for sporting activities in the country. Today, when about less than 25% of our population lives below the poverty line, the nation cannot spare funds from other developmental activities to sponsor sports. In such a scenario, privatisation of sports and games is the only remedy. It is done in the United States and the rest of the developed world. We can also do this if we wish sports and games to flourish in this country. The second cause of the fast-deteriorating standards in Indian sports is the politicisation of sports. Regionalism, linguism and favoritism are all visible, when any selection for a national or international event is made. This coupled with the lack of basic infrastructure, has hindered any progress in this direction. While we have gone in for huge stadia like the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, we have sadly neglected building small stadia and arenas in the rural and semi-urban centers, to encourage sporting talent in the initial stages. And such talent, whenever it comes to the fore, is grossly neglected at the time of selection for any event because they do not fit into any caste, region, language or group considerations of the selectors. This is a major shortcoming at the moment. Then, there is a lack of professionalism in our sportspersons; they lack the competitive spirit and are prone to rest on their laurels. Very few of our sportspersons keep up the strict regimen in respect of diet and training once they have achieved some name and fame. A medal here or a medal there is all they can achieve in lifetime before fading away into oblivion. The acme of their achievement is the Arjuna Award. How many chess grandmasters like Viswanathan Anand or cueists of international repute like Geet Sethi has the country produced? Our sportspersons, who have kept up the initial promise, can be counted on fingertips. Parental emphasis on studies, at the expense of sports and game, is another cause for the desperate straits in which Indian sports and games find themselves today. A sportsperson is considered no good unless he or she is academically above par, if not brilliant. A good sportsperson, who does not fare well in studies, is always looked down upon as an idler or no-gooder. Added to it is the lack of sports consciousness in the Indian mind. Our duty is to create an awareness of sports and games in the minds of the people if things are to improve in times to come. Otherwise we are likely to sink deeper into the morass with the passage of time. It is true our achievements in the sports have been negligible, but it is also true that there is no lack of talent in our country. If healthy atmosphere is created and selections properly made we can do a lot in this field. Simply to honour the outstanding sports persons at functions or staging international sports will not serve our purpose. We should extend every possible facility to our sportspersons and encourage them to take up sports and games more seriously.
